Cool supply
Conditioned air leaves the air handler, rides the trunk through the ceiling, and drops into every room register. That's what a service call is preserving.
Warm return
Room air is pulled back through the return grille, passes the filter, and re-enters the blower. A clogged return is the single most common cause of a system "running but not cooling."
The refrigerant loop
The line set carries R-410A between the outdoor condenser and the indoor coil in the air handler. A refrigerant charge issue is not a filter issue — different diagnosis, different quote line.
